12th Avenue Iron Inc.

Beckes Residence

Mercer Island, WA
(2008)

Cover Story, July 2009 issue of Builder/Architect Magazine

The custom staircase and guardrail system was a collaborative design between SkB Architects and 12th Avenue Iron. Staircase fabricated with 1/4" steel plate stringers interlocked with 1" steel plate tread supports, and 2" thick white oak treads. Guardrail posts brake-formed from 3/8" steel bar, with bronze tube handrail and glass infill panels. Engineered and installed a new steel channel structural beam to replace an existing structural steel column and create space for the new open staircase design. Project also includes bronze wall-mounted handrails, steel wall panels surrounding two fireplaces, 6 ft. high stainless steel pulls for front door, and steel and glass guardrails for two exterior decks.
